Shaping our city for the future

Canberra is Australia’s fastest growing city. In the next 15 years, the population is expected to reach more than 500,000.

The ACT Government is investing now to ensure that the best possible network, fleet and infrastructure are in place to meet the needs of our growing city and ensure Canberra remains one of the most liveable cities in the world.

The design of a modern, integrated network of bus and light rail is a critical first step.

You’ve spoken, and we’ve listened

Phase 1 of public consultation on the new bus network took place during November and December 2017. During this consultation and prior to this, three top priorities have been consistently highlighted:

  • more direct routes
  • more frequent and reliable services
  • increased services for on and off peak times

In Phase 2 of the public consultation, we wanted to understand how we can better support you to use the New Bus Network and improve your overall experience when using and connecting to public transport.

The ACT Government is currently reviewing this feedback and we will use all the data we have received to inform decision making. An overview of what we heard and how the network will be implemented will be available for public consumption in late-2018.

Canberra is an evolving, efficient and active city

Canberra is growing and lifestyles are changing. With fewer people now on a strict 9-to-5 schedule, there’s a greater need to provide more services to help people travel in the evenings and at weekends.

We are also an efficient, active and sustainable city, and preserving Canberra’s DNA remains as a liveable city is at the centre of the bus network design. The whole new system of public transport will allow Canberrans to really transform the way they move around the city, combining the use of cars, bikes, buses and the new light rail. It is a true multimodal network with widespread benefits.
